Ocean Conservation Curriculum

A deep dive into ocean literacy

Our pioneering Ocean Conservation Curriculum (OCC) is an immersive learning programme that develops understanding and engages children with sustainability issues.

Ocean Conservation Curriculum

The OCC provides pupils across our Connect family of schools a wonderful opportunity to learn about the sea. They discover how the ocean has shaped our planet, why it’s essential to all life on Earth, and how it needs to be protected for the future.

This curriculum, the first of its kind in the UK, is a partnership with a number of leading organisations, including the Ocean Conservation Trust, Marine Biological Association and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory. It provides not only an inspiring journey of discovery but also a focal point to develop learning in science, ecology, maths and literacy.

“The Trust has aims to provide a firm foundation for developing teachers and leaders in order to secure the best learning opportunities for our pupils.”

Stuart Bellworthy

CEO

"With the climate emergency gaining in urgency, we need our children to be better informed about the planet and its depleting resources."

Stuart Bellworthy

CEO

"We are delighted to have been approached by the Connect Academy Trust to work with them. Getting a cross-curricular Ocean themed learning programme into Plymouth schools will be a huge step in the right direction – not just for Ocean conservation, but for the blue economy too."

Stu Higgs

Programme Manager, OCT

"We are delighted that we will be taking ecology, conservation and research skills straight into classrooms and using it to teach literacy and maths as well as science. This is a UK first for us and we’re hopeful that other schools will want to join the project once they hear about it."

Nicola Bridge

Head of Conservation Education and Communications, oCT
