Meet the Connect team

Meet Stuart Bellworthy, our CEO/Trust Leader. Stuart's extensive education career began as a 1:1 teaching assistant in a village school in Devon, later becoming a qualified teacher, leader and Headteacher in a range of schools in the South West. He served as one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors for Ofsted and then became the Midlands Regional Director for E-ACT. In 2018, Stuart was appointed as the CEO of Connect Academy Trust, where he aims to improve educational provision for all children, have the very best staff working in our family of schools and grow the Trust in a sustainable way. An interesting fact about Stuart is that he has four amazing adult children, none of whom have chosen a career in education—so far!

Meet Rachel Field, our Chief Operating Officer and a key member of the Executive Leadership team. Rachel oversees IT, HR, Facilities, and Finance, making her the go-to person for operational matters across the Trust. Her journey began as an apprentice at KPMG, leading to roles as a Financial Controller in a Birmingham Trust and later as the CFBO for Coast Academies, which later merged with Connect. Personally, Rachel enjoys reading, theatre, and amateur dramatics. As a devoted mother of one, family time is a cherished priority. 

Meet Sarah Ryder, our School Improvement Lead, a beacon of educational excellence and leadership. With a passion for impacting children's lives, Sarah was the headteacher of Manadon Vale Primary School from 2014 to 2022 and a founding headteacher of the Connect Academy Trust. In 2022, she took on the role of acting headteacher at Cockington Primary School, demonstrating her commitment to support during challenging times. As a trained Ofsted inspector, she serves as a lead inspector for the Southwest. In her current role, Sarah supports schools within the Connect Trust and beyond in teaching, curriculum development, assessment, and subject leadership. On a personal note, she's a married mother of two, a Plymouth Argyle supporter, and finds relaxation in playing the piano.

Meet Stephanie Bulley, our Executive Assistant and Governance Professional. Our guru for governance queries and organisational questions or tasks related to Trust meetings. Stephanie is building her governance knowledge through a course with the NGA. Personally, she loves the sea and dreams of having a house on the beach. As a mother of two boys attending a school within the Trust, Stephanie works flexibly, showcasing her commitment to both professional and family life.

Christian has over 30 years of commercial experience gained within the professional services and property sectors with a focus on business development, innovation, entrepreneurship, technology and media.  Within these sectors he has held senior operational and leadership roles holding full P&L accountability, strategic development and delivery, business development and financial budgeting and accountability.  His leadership skills were developed in early career as an army officer and have been enhanced in other leadership roles within the charity, NFP and public sectors.

Christian is also Chair of the Wave Multi Academy Trust, a Member of the Marine Biological Association and Academic Mentor with the University of Exeter Business School.

Ian has been closely associated with school governance since 2010, having specialised in holding leaders to account for academic results and ensuring school finances are deployed to provide the best possible outcomes for children. During this period, he has held the position of Chair of Governors for one of our Trust’s schools. Ian has fully embraced the role and spent a considerable amount of time in schools with head teachers, teachers, business managers and children. This has given him a comprehensive understanding of how schools are run. Through owning his own business and school experience, he has strong strategic planning skills and likes to look at the bigger picture. Ian is the link trustee for disadvantaged pupils.

Both of Ian’s daughters attended a primary school within the Trust. He started his own estate agency and lettings business 20 years ago and he now employs 21 local people, his award winning business is regarded as one of the market leading property businesses in the South West. Ian is a member of the Plymouth Area Business Council, the Plymouth Area Property Professionals Association, a Fellow of the National Association of Estate Agents and a qualified Domestic Energy Assessor. Ian gains great satisfaction from supporting schools and finds it very rewarding giving some of his free time to an organisation that’s sole purpose is to provide children with the best education and childhood experiences possible.

Meet Adam Hedley, a seasoned IT professional with 25 years of education IT experience, started part-time during college, evolving into an IT Manager for the Trust. Throughout his career, he embraced technological advancements, ensuring cutting-edge systems for student and staff benefit. Notably, his passion for IT extends to his daughter, currently pursuing A Levels with a focus on IT. Adam's commitment to high standards and meticulous attention to detail defines his work, reflecting a lifelong dedication to the ever-evolving field of educational technology.

Meet Adam Losonczy, our friendly IT Technician, and our go-to for all things IT-related. With nearly 3 years of experience, he previously worked for OPRO mouthguard and engaged with global companies. Adam, also a polyglot proficient in two languages, is dedicated to continuous professional development. His dynamic personality and skillset, coupled with IT and security certifications, make him a valuable asset for the Trust. 

Meet Ana Avasilcai, our esteemed Management Accountant at Connect Academy Trust, with 9 years of experience in the multi-academy trust sector. Ana, who joined in 2022, is our go-to for budgets, compliance, and financial forecasting. Her expertise spans financial reporting, variance analysis, and internal control implementation, contributing to the Trust's financial success. Beyond her financial acumen, Ana is a working mother of two, showcasing flexibility and determination. Her interests include reading and exploring new cuisines, adding a flavourful dimension to her professional and personal life. 

Meet Denise Harding, our expert in Finance & Procurement. Contacted for finance-related issues, including contract information. Denise brings valuable experience from her roles as School Business Manager at Cockington Primary School, School Operations Lead at Eden Park, and her current position in Finance and Procurement for Shared Services at Connect Academy Trust. On a personal note, Denise enjoys walking and appreciating the beautiful scenery throughout the Southwest.

Meet Emma Wilkins, our School Operations Lead for Eggbuckland Primary School. With 10 years of experience in Admin, Finance, and Business Manager roles in Hampshire schools, including serving as a Bursar for a Federation in the New Forest, Emma brings valuable expertise to her role. Ona personal note, Emma recently moved to Devon from Hampshire to enjoy a slower pace of life. She enjoys playing golf and walking the dog in her free time.

Meet Georgia Dingley, our dedicated School Operations Lead for Widey Court Primary School. From HR and payroll to school admissions and Arbor system support, Georgia is a knowledgeable resource ready to assist. Starting as an admin apprentice in September 2017, her journey at Widey exemplifies dedication and career progression. Beyond her professional role, Georgia's Polish heritage, inherited from her mother, adds a rich cultural dimension to her life, reflecting the diversity of her family's origins and her own multicultural experiences.

Meet Jessica Jenkin, our Educational Welfare Officer. Contact her for matters concerning attendance support and strategies to maximize and maintain good school attendance for both school and families. Jessica's experience includes working as a Teaching Assistant across all year groups and later as a Parent Support Advisor, fostering positive school communities. On a personal note, Jessica is married with a teenage daughter and is a huge Harry Potter fan.

Meet Jon Whittam, our dedicated IT Support Technician, our go-to for technical assistance with over two decades of experience. Jon excels in resolving software glitches, hardware issues, and network problems, earning a strong reputation for exceptional customer service. Known for building robust relationships and patiently assisting users, he navigates complex IT challenges with clarity. On a personal note, Jon's unique touch is his strong aversion to couscous, adding an interesting dimension to his culinary preferences. 

Bringing over a decade of comprehensive experience in Information Technology, I have traversed through diverse sectors, accumulating valuable insights and expertise along the way. My journey began humbly at the helpdesk, where I cultivated a strong foundation in technical support and user assistance. Through perseverance and a commitment to professional growth, I steadily climbed the ranks, eventually assuming the role of an IT manager. This trajectory has equipped me with a holistic understanding of IT operations across various sectors, blending technical proficiency with strategic management skills. Beyond the confines of the digital world, I find joy in sharing my love for mountain biking with my 3-year-old daughter, combining the thrill of outdoor adventures with precious family moments.

As Trust HR Manager, Julie brings over two decades of education and HR experience. Holding a Diploma in School Business Management, she earned expertise as an Associate of Legal Executives in litigation. Julie's role involves collaborative work, providing advisory services to employees and specialised guidance to Headteachers and the Executive Leadership Team. Actively contributing to strategic Trust projects, she plays a key role in achieving overall objectives and success. Julie's multifaceted expertise and collaborative approach make her an integral part of the Trust's operations.

With 15+ years in the education sector, spanning primary and secondary schools, Kim specialises in supporting Trust schools in financial systems and processes. Passionate about advocating for Connect schools, she also enhances admissions and recruitment, committing to their growth through her social media work. She has recently prioritised her professional development with a digital marketing qualification. Outside work, she enjoys family holidays with her husband and two children, and has a lovable Cockapoo named Buddy. In 2021, she ran the London Marathon, raising £2000 for NSPCC, showcasing determination and commitment to positive impact, personally and professionally.

Meet Lee Atkinson, our proactive Facilities Manager, our go-to person for all facilities-related matters. With a unique background in Countryside Management, Lee's journey includes skills in farming, habitat management, and project management on a vast country estate. Transitioning to education in Devon, he rose from Caretaker at Preston Primary to Deputy Facilities Manager for eight schools in the trust. Currently pursuing a Level 4 Diploma in Facilities Management, Lee is committed to enhancing his expertise. His early fascination with dismantling objects cultivated exceptional problem-solving abilities, as well as getting him in trouble with his parents!

Meet Lisa Braund, our dedicated Health & Safety Manager, our contact for safety, compliance, and well-being. Lisa provides Smartlog support, risk assessment advice, and guidance for curriculum activities. She assists with complex staff risk assessments, Evolve for EVCs, first aid reporting, and accident investigations. Collaborating closely with the Facilities Manager, she addresses health and safety concerns. Lisa's extensive experience includes training in risk assessment, first aid, and qualifications like IOSH Managing Safely. Currently pursuing the NEBOSH General Certificate, she actively engages in awareness training for Asbestos, Legionella, COSHH, Fire Awareness, and CDM. Outside work, Lisa enjoys adventurous wild camping and wild swimming with her spirited Spaniel.

Meet Liz Bennett, School Operations Lead for Manadon Vale Primary School and Thornbury Primary School, and a go-to for essential matters like recruitment, training, safeguarding, payroll, and more. With extensive experience since November 2021, initially starting as an Administrator, Liz moved from managing bookshops. She oversees office teams at Manadon and Thornbury, ensuring smooth operations. Beyond work, Liz embraces adventure with her new hobby - sea swimming, reflecting her spirited zest for life. 

Introducing Louise Hudd, our dedicated Finance Officer, the point person for all invoice payment and budget inquiries. Louise brings a wealth of financial expertise to her role, having spent nine years in Group Risk insurance in Bristol, followed by 2.5 years in an accountancy practice in Torquay. She's currently pursuing her AAT Level 3 in accounting at South Devon College, demonstrating a relentless commitment to professional growth, even if she feels "VERY old" in the process. Beyond her financial acumen, Louise also holds a degree in Zoology, showcasing her diverse interests and talents.

Nikki Graham, School Operations Lead at Cockington Primary School, is our go-to resource for all things HR, from recruitment and absence management to payroll and everything in between. With a background in HR, as a PA, and Office Manager roles, she has been a valuable asset to the school's administrative team since 2015. Nikki is also skilled in SCR and DBS management, conducting staff risk assessments, and overseeing the efficient operation of the school's administrative office. Outside of her professional life, she is a talented silversmith and a Reiki Master. In her spare time, she enjoys adventures with her husband in their beloved 1959 VW Splitscreen Campervan, affectionately known as "Ugly Betty."

Phil has many years of IT support experience working for private companies and for the NHS. He ran a pub for six years which really stretched his customer service levels. Big fan of quiz shows – appeared on Fifteen-to-One on Channel 4 (didn’t too that well) and also Ken Bruce’s Popmaster on the radio winning a digital radio!

Meet Sammy Elbrow, our Senior School Operations Lead. Sammy oversees the School Operations Lead role for Leigham Primary while supporting operations across the other 7 schools within the trust. With over 9 years of experience in education, Sammy brings valuable expertise in school admin, finance, and HR. On a personal note, Sammy is a keen baker known for her delicious cupcakes among friends and family.

Meet Sarah Goodman, our Finance Officer at Connect. Handling queries related to invoices, trips, subscriptions, suppliers, and budgets, Sarah brings valuable experience from her role as Finance Assistant and school administrator at Eden Park Primary School and previous work with a children's charity. In 2023, she gained her AAT Level 2 qualification in Accounting. Personally, she's a mother of three, a huge dog lover, and often spotted running on the streets of Torbay.
