Stay connected with a round-up of recent events and news from schools in the Connect family.

Connect Academy Trust

The Connect schools recently participated in the Top of the Rocks competition. Pupils were encouraged to log in to their Times Tables Rock Stars accounts to play maths games, with points gained for the most correct answers. The top three schools were Cockington Primary School, Thornbury Primary School and Eggbuckland Vale Primary School. A special mention for Cockington Primary School who also had a clean sweep with the top ten pupil performers from across the Trust! Well done to all the children who took part.

Last week, a large group of pupils from the Trust represented their schools at the Young Voices concert. Thousands of children from across the country have spent months rehearsing a diverse selection of songs, culminating in a spectacular performance as a collective choir at the Resorts Arena in Birmingham. An amazing and memorable opportunity for our pupils. Well done to our singing superstars from Cockington Primary School, Eggbuckland Vale Primary School, Leigham Primary School, Manadon Vale Primary School and Widey Court Primary School.

Eden Park Primary & Nursery School

The Reception classes enjoyed their first Bikeability lesson after winning a bid for £2500 worth of training and equipment. The first lesson consisted of safety skills, riding in a straight line and manoeuvring around cones. The staff were very impressed with the children's skills and are already looking forward to their next lesson.

Manadon Vale Primary School

A fantastic achievement for the school who have been awarded the prestigious UNICEF Bronze Award for Rights Respecting Schools. This accolade acknowledges that their ethos is based on principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation.

Foundation Stage have been wassailing, a tradition dating back to Anglo-Saxon times which sees people coming together to bless orchard trees, in the hope they will go onto produce healthy apples. As you can see, some of the children chose to make some wonderful headbands too!

Preston Primary School

Foundation Stage have enjoyed learning about Firefighters. Pupils were very interested in the evolution of the uniforms and fire engines and spent some time studying the Great Fire of London. The children were fascinated to learn that there was no fire service in 1666, and the people had to tackle the blaze themselves!

Year 2 welcomed a visitor from the local dental health team. The children learnt the importance of good oral hygiene and how to properly care for their teeth.

Thornbury Primary School

Year 2 have been team building in PE, using communication to guide their blindfolded partners to complete tasks. They have been developing trust by making sure that their friends are safe and not bumping into each other.

Year 6 have been learning about World War 2 and its impact on Plymouth. The children discussed why Plymouth was targeted during the Blitz and why the children would have needed to be evacuated from the city for their safety.
